Instructions for Authors
Everything needed to prepare a manuscript for this journal is on this page: the limits for each accepted format, how the file should be built, what must be reported, and what to check before sending it.
FORMATS AND LIMITS
Accepted formats and their limits
The journal accepts the eight formats below. Preparation limits are published for the three full-length formats; for the remaining five the editorial office confirms the requirements before submission.
- ORIGINAL RESEARCH / RESEARCH ARTICLES
- Full-length studies reporting new findings.
- REVIEW ARTICLES, SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS AND META-ANALYSES
- Syntheses of a defined question, narrative or systematic, with or without quantitative pooling.
- SHORT COMMUNICATIONS / BRIEF REPORTS
- Brief reports of preliminary findings, urgent observations or technical innovations.
- CASE REPORTS / CASE SERIES
- Single cases or short series with a clear teaching point.
- EDITORIALS, COMMENTARIES, PERSPECTIVES AND OPINIONS
- Argued positions on a question in transplantation, with the evidence they rest on.
- LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- Short correspondence, including comment on work the journal has published.
- TECHNICAL NOTES / METHODOLOGY PAPERS
- Surgical techniques, laboratory methods and measurement procedures.
- PROTOCOLS
- Planned studies described in full before their results are known.
Authors preparing one of the other five formats are welcome to write to the editorial office, which will confirm the requirements for that format before submission.
LIMITS
Limits for the full-length formats
These are the journal's single set of limits and are the figures quoted wherever limits appear.
- ORIGINAL RESEARCH / RESEARCH ARTICLES
- Up to 5,000 words of body text. Structured abstract of up to 250 words under Background, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Four to six keywords. Up to 50 references. Up to six figures and tables combined. Section order: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, References.
- REVIEW ARTICLES, SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS AND META-ANALYSES
- Up to 7,000 words of body text. Unstructured abstract of up to 250 words. Four to six keywords. Up to 100 references. Figures and tables as the argument requires. Section order: Abstract, Introduction, main body under descriptive subheadings, Conclusions, References. A systematic review or meta-analysis follows PRISMA and attaches the completed checklist.
- CASE REPORTS / CASE SERIES
- Up to 2,500 words of body text. Unstructured abstract of up to 150 words. Four to six keywords. Up to 15 references. Clinical images welcome, with written consent to publish. Section order: Abstract, Introduction, Case Presentation, Discussion, Conclusions, Learning Points, References.
THE FILE
Preparing the file
A manuscript that arrives in the form below moves straight to screening.
- MANUSCRIPT FORMAT
- Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or LaTeX. Double-spaced, with continuous line numbers and consecutive page numbers. Times New Roman 12pt or Arial 11pt used consistently throughout.
- TITLE PAGE
- Full title; running title of up to 50 characters; every author’s name and affiliation; the corresponding author’s email and telephone; ORCID identifiers where registered; and the body word count. Supplied as a separate file where double-blind review is requested.
- FIGURES
- TIFF, EPS, PNG or high-quality JPEG at a minimum of 300 dpi at final printed size. One file per figure, numbered in the order they are cited. Legends supplied in the manuscript file, not embedded in the image.
- TABLES
- Editable text in the manuscript file, one table per page, numbered in the order they are cited, each with a short title above and any notes beneath. Tables must be editable text to be typeset.
- SUPPLEMENTARY FILES
- Cited in the text as Supplementary Table 1, Supplementary Figure 1 and so on, supplied separately, and published alongside the article under the same license.
- LANGUAGE
- Clear English, in either British or American usage applied consistently. An optional, author-paid language-editing service is available; it is independent of the editorial process and does not affect the review outcome or decision.
REPORTING
What must be reported
These requirements are checked at screening, and a manuscript missing one is returned for completion before review.
STATISTICS
Report the statistical methods precisely, naming the software and its version.
Give sample-size justification, including a power calculation where the design supports one.
Report exact P values rather than thresholds, with 95% confidence intervals and effect sizes for primary comparisons.
Give measures of central tendency with an appropriate measure of dispersion, and state how missing data were handled.
METHODS
Give enough detail for the work to be repeated independently.
Name drugs generically, with the manufacturer where a specific formulation matters.
Name equipment with its model and manufacturer.
Cite a previously published method rather than restating it.
- REPORTING GUIDELINES
- Randomized trials follow CONSORT; observational studies STROBE; systematic reviews and meta-analyses PRISMA; case reports CARE; diagnostic-accuracy studies STARD; animal studies ARRIVE; qualitative studies COREQ. Submit the completed checklist as a supplementary file.
- TRIAL REGISTRATION
- Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
- DATA AVAILABILITY
- Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Give the repository and accession or the conditions of access; where access to the data is restricted, say on what grounds.
- ETHICS AND CONSENT
- Name the approving ethics committee or review board with its reference number, and state that informed consent was obtained. Publishing an identifiable image, case detail or personal record requires separate written consent.
- PERMISSIONS
- Reusing a figure, table or extended quotation from another work requires written permission from the rights holder, supplied at submission and credited in the legend.
- AI USE
- Disclose any use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript, naming the tool and what it was used for. AI tools are not authors. Authors remain responsible for every statement in the work.
REFERENCES
References
Number references in the order they are first cited, and cite them in the text by that number. Give a DOI wherever one exists.

ON REQUEST
Preparing a manuscript for double-blind review
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Authors who request double-blind review prepare two files.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
Say on submission that double-blind review is requested, so the editorial office can handle the files accordingly.
CHECKLIST
Before you send it
Running through this list before submitting is the quickest way to reach review without a return.
- The manuscript is within the word limit for its format, double-spaced, with line and page numbers.
- The abstract has the required structure and is within its limit, with four to six keywords.
- The title page is complete, with affiliations, corresponding-author contact details and ORCID identifiers.
- References are numbered in citation order, within the limit for the format, with DOIs where they exist.
- Figures are separate files at a minimum of 300 dpi; tables are editable text; legends are in the manuscript.
- The relevant reporting checklist is completed and attached.
- Ethics approval, consent, trial registration and the data-availability statement are present where they apply.
- Competing interests and funding are declared for every author, and any AI use is disclosed.
- Permission is held and supplied for any reused material.
- Only one submission route is being used for this manuscript.
