Article Processing Charges
The journal is open access and charges no subscription or reader fee. Publication is funded by an article processing charge, payable only after a manuscript has been accepted.
THE CHARGE
What the charge is
There is no submission fee. The charge falls due once a manuscript has been accepted, and never before.

- Original research and research articles; review articles, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- USD 1,500
- Short communications and brief reports; case reports and case series; technical notes and methodology papers.
- OTHER FORMATS
- For editorials, commentaries, perspectives and opinions, letters to the editor, and protocols, the editorial office confirms the charge before submission.
- WHEN IT IS PAYABLE
- After acceptance. An invoice is issued to the corresponding author or, on request, directly to the institution.
- WHAT DECIDES THE OUTCOME
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships and editorial or reviewing roles.
WHAT IT FUNDS
What the charge funds
The charge covers the work between acceptance and a permanent, freely readable article.
EDITORIAL HANDLING
Screening, the coordination of independent peer review, and the editorial handling of revisions and the decision.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
PRODUCTION
Copy-editing, typesetting, XML tagging, figure preparation and the production of the final article in HTML and PDF.
THE RECORD
Crossref DOI registration and metadata deposit, hosting, and commitment of the content to the Portico preservation archive.
BILLING
Billing and fee-relief inquiries
Invoices can be issued to an author or to an institution, and most research funders treat a publication charge as an allowable cost.
INSTITUTIONAL BILLING
Many institutions hold central open-access funds. The editorial office will invoice an institution directly on request; ask your library or research office what arrangement is in place before submitting.
FEE RELIEF
Authors for whom the charge is a barrier are invited to write to the editorial office before submitting and describe their circumstances, so that what can be arranged is settled in advance rather than after acceptance.
A membership reduces the charge for a member’s own submissions; the categories and their terms are on Membership, and membership has no bearing on any editorial decision.
WITHDRAWAL
Withdrawing a manuscript
A manuscript may be withdrawn at any point. These are the terms on which that is done.
- Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
- Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
- Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal’s APC.
- Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at a time is a breach of publication ethics; the journal’s position on it is set out on Editorial Policies.
